I am preparing a new solo exhibition entitled ‘Scratching the Glass Ceiling’, based on my Life Drawings, from 1969 until 2025 . In this body of work I use simple tools and mediums; pencil, pen, wash, gouache and chalk.
The glass ceiling is a metaphor for the invisible barriers people face. It may also be defined as people’s conceptualisation of their own views of self, based on how they perceive that others view them. For me, the glass ceiling is a barrier that I have personally faced trying to get my work into a major gallery. The issue for me, as an artist, is my lack of self promotion, something that seems to be easier for younger artists who have grown up in a world of interviews and selection processes. I know now, that in this modern world, that the galleries won’t come to me, so I have to go to them!
I love drawing The Nude, and I excel in this genre. My work was recognised at the National Art School quite early in my four year course. I love drawing both male and female figures.
